چکیده

An on-going challenge for decision makers is the interpretation of temporal trends from monitoring data given that environmental processes often generate complex data that are multivariate and potentially nonlinear. Generalized additive models (GAMs) is a wellsuited modelling framework for uncovering such trends and unifying datasets. This approach allows flexible specification of regression splines to represent the functional relationships between a response variable (the parameter of interest) and a suite of temporal and spatial covariates that can be continuous or discrete using a link function and smooth functions of the covariates. We highlight the utility of using GAMs through three case studies. The first highlights the use of a GAM to unify the findings of an established longterm water quality-monitoring program with those of a focused short-term monitoring program. In the second, a GAM is used to evaluate the spatial patterns in a biomonitoring dataset whilst simultaneously accounting for variability in oyster size, which can have a confounding effect on such data. The final case study focuses on a 12 month continuous monitoring program of oceanographic data as part of an evaluation of the environmental conditions for a desalination plant intake pipe. The context for these studies is predominantly water quality in the coastal zone, however the benefits and widespread application to other research areas is clearly evident.

Random Projection Features and Generalized Additive Models

We propose to learn generalized additive models for classification which represents the classifier using a sum of piecewise linear functions and show that a recently proposed fast linear SVM training method (Pegasos) can be adapted to train such models with the same convergence rates. To be able to learn functions on combination of dimensions, we explore the use of random projection features wh...

Exploring the Use of Random Regression Models withLegendre Polynomials to Analyze Clutch Sizein Iranian Native Fowl

Random regression models (RRM) have become common for the analysis of longitudinal data or repeated records on individual over time. The goal of this paper was to explore the use of random regression models with orthogonal / Legendre polynomials (RRL) to analyze new repeated measures called clutch size (CS) as a meristic trait for Iranian native fowl. Legendre polynomial functions of increasing...

Predicting the Potential Habitat Distribution of Crataegus Pontica C. Koch, Using a Combined Modeling Approach in Lorestan Province

Habitat degradation is one the important reasons of plant species extinction. Modeling techniques are widely used for identifying the potential habitats of different plant species. Thus, the purpose of current study was to determine potential habitats of Zalzalak in Lorestan Province. Species presence data and 23 environmental variables were collected in Lorestan Province. Correlation analysis ...
